Author: Kipling, Rudyard. et al. Title: The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine. March, 1892
Description: New York, The Century Co, 1892. Wraps. Illustrated wraps. Black and white illustrations throughout. Single issue of this general interest magazine. This with what is presumed to be part of a story by Rudyard Kipling, "The Naulahka." Also included is a study of life/culture in Georgia by Richard Malcolm Johnston, "Rural Life in Middle Georgia." This is accompanied by illustrations by E.W. Kemble, including some of African-Americans. The essay looks at the development of culture in Georgia, including both white and Black residents, although it treats the experiences of African-Americans in stereotypical or whitewashing fashion, as exemplified by the line, "The slave of the average Middle Georgian regarded his master as the greatest and best of mankind, and loved him with a love that neither time nor war with its impoverishments and prostrations could subdue." GOOD condition. Some soiling to the wrappers. Minor chipping and tearing along the extremities and spine, with some loss at the tail of the spine. Light toning in the interior. Good .
