Slight wear & slight soiling to spine, covers & corners. ; Joseph Holland Tringham (1861–1908) was a talented Victorian artist and illustrator who made significant contributions to British art and culture. Born in Hammersmith, London, he initially trained as an engineer but soon discovered his passion for art. His illustrations gained widespread recognition, appearing in esteemed publications such as The Illustrated London News and The Sketch. Tringham’s skill earned him royal patronage, with King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra sitting for portraits by him. He also exhibited his works at the Royal Academy and traveled extensively, drawing inspiration from visits to countries like India, China, and Japan. In 1891, Tringham settled in Streatham, South London, where he created six iconic sketches of the old village. These works captured the charm of Streatham and were later published as postcards, becoming beloved representations of the area’s history. Today, his legacy is honored locally, with copies of his sketches displayed in a pub named after him, The Holland Tringham, ensuring his contributions to the community are remembered. Despite his artistic achievements, Tringham faced personal challenges later in life. The rise of photographic reproduction diminished demand for illustrated work, impacting his career. Struggling with alcoholism and mental health issues, he passed away at the age of 47 in 1908 after being institutionalized following a breakdown during a trip to the Isle of Man. Though his life ended tragically, Tringham’s art continues to be celebrated for its beauty and historical significance. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 66 pages. Very Good .
