Alvarez's "Caseros ó 3 de febrero de 1852" is a concise historical account published in Montevideo by Imprenta El libro inglés in 1897. This 28-page work examines the pivotal Battle of Caseros, which occurred near Buenos Aires on February 3, 1852. The book details the conflict between the Army of Buenos Aires commanded by Juan Manuel de Rosas and the Grand Army (Ejército Grande) led by Justo José de Urquiza, which ultimately resulted in Rosas's defeat and exile to England. The Battle of Caseros marked a decisive turning point in Argentine history. The conflict pitted the forces of Juan Manuel de Rosas, governor of Buenos Aires province who had effectively ruled Argentina as a dictator since 1835, against a coalition consisting of the Argentine provinces of Entre Ríos and Corrientes, the Empire of Brazil, and Uruguay. Urquiza's army of approximately 24,000 men, including 3,500 Brazilians and 1,500 Uruguayans, overwhelmed Rosas's forces of 10,000 infantry and 12,000 cavalry. The six-hour battle resulted in approximately 2,000 casualties, with 1,500 of these being Rosistas, and an additional 7,000 of Rosas's men captured in combat. The historical significance of this battle cannot be overstated. After Rosas fled to exile in the United Kingdom, Urquiza emerged as the provisional Director of the Argentine Confederation. This transition of power set in motion a period known as "National Organization," leading to the San Nicolás Agreement that called for the creation of Argentina's first true national constitution. This constitution, established in 1853, became the foundation for the modern Argentine state and remains the basis for the current constitution. However, the battle's aftermath was not without complications. The ruling elite in Buenos Aires aspired to maintain their traditional political and economic dominance over the other provinces, resulting in a decade-long separation between the Argentine Confederation and the State of Buenos Aires. While both entities claimed to be part of a single nation, they functioned essentially as separate states. Complete national unification would not be achieved until 1880, following years of continued civil conflicts. Alvarez's work, though brief, stands as an important historical document chronicling this watershed moment that transformed Argentina's political landscape from a loosely connected confederation dominated by a strongman to a constitutional republic with more formalized governance structures.
