Born on 9 July 1918 in London, he grew up in a family that valued literature and culture. Despite being diagnosed with a progressive eye condition that led to near-total blindness by the 1970s, Heath-Stubbs’s poetic output remained prolific and enduring. He studied at Queen's College, Oxford, where he earned a reputation as a skilled classicist and poet. Deeply influenced by classical mythology and English literary traditions, his poetry often drew on these themes, blending scholarly depth with a playful, inventive voice. His works, such as The Triumph of the Muse (1958) and Artorius (1972) , demonstrate his ability to traverse mythological landscapes and bring them to life in modern forms. As a translator, Heath-Stubbs introduced readers to lesser-known works of Arabic, Persian, and French poets, as well as the classics. He was highly respected for his editorial contributions, including his work on The Faber Book of Twentieth-Century Verse. Heath-Stubbs was honoured with numerous awards throughout his career, including the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 1973. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1988. Despite his blindness, he maintained an active literary presence, giving readings and lectures with remarkable skill. A member of the London literary scene, he was known for his wit and charm, even as his work often tackled themes of mortality and the human condition. He passed away on 26 December 2006, leaving behind a legacy of richly textured, scholarly poetry that continues to inspire readers and writers alike. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 61 pages. Very Good+ .
