Slight wear to spine, covers & corners. ; Jill Allibone (née Spencer) (20 June 1932 – 3 February 1998) was a notable British architectural historian who specialized in Victorian architecture. She made significant contributions to the field through her scholarly works on architects Anthony Salvin and George Devey. Allibone studied history at Oxford University, where she met her husband, art historian Samuel Allibone. After teaching and raising two sons, she pursued an external degree in the History of Art at the University of London, graduating in 1975. She then completed a doctorate focusing on Anthony Salvin. Her thesis was published in 1987, marking the first comprehensive study of Salvin's life and work. Salvin was renowned for restoring medieval castles like Windsor and Warwick and designing country houses. In 1991, Allibone published a monograph on George Devey, another influential Victorian architect known for his country houses and estate buildings that spurred the vernacular revival in late 19th-century architecture. Her books are praised for their thorough research and clear writing style. Beyond her publications, Allibone was passionate about preserving Victorian architecture. In 1977, she founded the Victorian Society's Churches Committee, dedicated to protecting Victorian and Edwardian churches from demolition or unsympathetic alterations. She was also an avid collector of 19th-century watercolors and drawings, with her collection exhibited at institutions like the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Her dedication to architectural history and preservation left a lasting impact on the appreciation of Victorian architecture. ; 27.3 x 22 x 1.7 cms; 200 pages. Very Good with no dustjacket .
