Born on January 14, 1876, in New Brighton, Cheshire, England, Loraine initially pursued a career in the military. He served in the British Army and later became interested in aviation. Loraine gained fame not only for his acting skills but also for his achievements in aviation. He became the first person to make a live parachute jump from an airplane in 1913. This daring feat added to his reputation as an adventurous and multi-talented individual. In the realm of acting, Robert Loraine had a successful career on both sides of the Atlantic. He appeared in numerous stage productions, including several Shakespearean plays. His notable roles include performances in "Cyrano de Bergerac" and "If I Were King." Loraine was known for his strong stage presence and his ability to capture the audience's attention. When World War I broke out, Loraine once again took on a military role and served as a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps. After the war, he continued his acting career and also became involved in aviation ventures. Unfortunately, Robert Loraine's life was cut short in a tragic plane crash. On December 23, 1935, his aircraft crashed in the English Channel, resulting in his death at the age of 59. Despite the tragic end to his life, Loraine is remembered for his pioneering contributions to aviation and his successful career as a stage actor. ; 19.2 x 13.3 x 3.1 cms; xxviii, 274, (2) pages.
