Galvin authored over 15 poetry collections, including Winter Oysters (1983) , Hotel Malabar (1998) —which won the Iowa Poetry Prize—and Habitat: New and Selected Poems 1965–2005, a finalist for the National Book Award. Throughout his career, Galvin received numerous accolades, such as a Guggenheim Fellowship, two NEA fellowships, and the Levinson Prize from Poetry magazine. He held teaching positions at various institutions, including Hollins University and the University of Alabama.
