Born in Everett, Massachusetts, to a mail carrier and a hairdresser, Galvin's early life included working in various jobs such as tarring roads and working in a meat department. He pursued higher education with dedication, earning a BS from Boston College, an MA from Northeastern University, and both an MFA and a PhD from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Galvin authored over 15 poetry collections, including Winter Oysters (1983) , Hotel Malabar (1998) —which won the Iowa Poetry Prize—and Habitat: New and Selected Poems 1965–2005, a finalist for the National Book Award. Throughout his career, Galvin received numerous accolades, such as a Guggenheim Fellowship, two NEA fellowships, and the Levinson Prize from Poetry magazine. He held teaching positions at various institutions, including Hollins University and the University of Alabama.
