Born in Croydon, Surrey, he studied at New College, Oxford, earning a first-class degree in 1941. During World War II, he served in the Royal Artillery and was later seconded to Intelligence. After the war, he became a fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and held academic posts at Aberdeen University and the University of Cambridge, where he was appointed Professor of Modern English in 1972. He also served as the Byron Professor at the University of Athens from 1961 to 1963. Holloway’s poetry includes The Minute (1956) , The Fugue (1960) , and Civitatula (1993). As a critic, his influential book The Victorian Sage (1953) explored the moral and philosophical voices in Victorian literature. He was associated with The Movement, a group of mid-20th-century British poets known for formalism and clarity, and was featured in the anthology New Lines (1956). Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1956, Holloway left a lasting legacy through both his verse and his critical writings.. Good with no dust jacket .
