The Itinerants were a group of Russian realist artists who formed the Society for Traveling Art Exhibitions in 1870. Dissatisfied with the rigid and conservative constraints of the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, they sought to break away from academic traditions and make art accessible to the broader public. The group organized traveling exhibitions across Russia to bring art to people who had limited access to cultural institutions. The Itinerants focused on portraying the realities of Russian life, including social injustices, the hardships of peasants, and the beauty of the Russian landscape. Their works often contained critical commentary on societal issues, aiming to inspire reform and raise awareness. By doing so, they played a crucial role in the development of Russian realism and influenced future generations of artists. Prominent members of the movement included Ivan Kramskoi, Ilya Repin, Vasily Perov, Vasily Surikov, and Isaac Levitan. Their collective efforts not only revolutionized Russian art but also contributed to the cultural and intellectual discourse of the time. ; 26.4 x 21 x 1.8 cms; 208 pages.
