Born into the prominent Guinness family known for their brewing enterprise, he pursued a career in politics and public service. Guinness served as a Member of Parliament for various constituencies from 1907 to 1931. During World War I, he distinguished himself in the military, earning the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and the Military Cross for his bravery. In recognition of his service, he was elevated to the peerage as Baron Moyne in 1932. Lord Moyne held several significant governmental positions, including Secretary of State for the Colonies and Leader of the House of Lords. An avid traveler and author, he wrote Walkabout: A Journey in Lands between the Pacific & Indian Oceans in 1936, detailing his explorations in Australia and the surrounding regions. Tragically, he was assassinated in Cairo in 1944 by members of the Zionist militant group Lehi, an event that had profound implications for British policy in the Middle East. Walkabout is a travelogue that chronicles Lord Moyne's expeditions through Australia, Papua New Guinea, and other parts of the Pacific during the 1930s. The book offers vivid descriptions of the landscapes, cultures, and peoples he encountered. Lord Moyne provides insightful observations on the lives of Indigenous Australians and Pacific Islanders, exploring their traditions, social structures, and interactions with the environment. His narrative combines personal adventure with anthropological interest, shedding light on regions that were relatively unknown to the Western world at the time. The work stands as a valuable historical document, capturing a snapshot of the era's colonial dynamics and natural beauty. This particular copy of Walkabout originates from the library of Exbury House, a distinguished estate located in Hampshire, England. Exbury House has been associated with the Rothschild family since it was acquired by Lionel de Rothschild in 1919. The Rothschilds, a family of significant influence in banking, philanthropy, and the arts, transformed Exbury into a world-renowned garden estate, celebrated for its extensive collection of rhododendrons, azaleas, and camellias. The presence of Lord Moyne's Walkabout in the Exbury House library reflects the Rothschild family's deep appreciation for exploration, nature, and cultural studies. The family's connection to Lord Moyne is emblematic of the social and political circles of the time, where prominent families often intersected through shared interests and public service. The book not only enriches the literary collection of Exbury House but also symbolizes the historical ties between two influential families who contributed significantly to British society in the early 20th century. ; 22 x 15.5 x 4 cms; xxvi, 366 pages.
