Born in Truro, Cornwall, Tiller studied history at Jesus College, Cambridge, graduating with a first-class degree and winning the Chancellor's Gold Medal for English Verse in 1937. He lectured in medieval history at Cambridge until 1939, after which he taught English literature at King Fuad I University in Cairo during World War II. While in Egypt, Tiller became associated with the "Personal Landscape" group of poets, including Keith Douglas and Lawrence Durrell. His early poetry, influenced by his experiences in wartime Egypt, was published in collections such as Poems (1941) , The Inward Animal (1943) , and Unarm, Eros (1947) , noted for their formal structure and vivid imagery. In 1946, Tiller joined the BBC Features Department, producing numerous radio plays and features on literature, history, and mythology. Notably, he adapted and produced the first BBC radio series of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings in 1955. Tiller's later poetry collections include Reading a Medal (1957) , Notes for a Myth (1968) , and That Singing Mesh (1979). He also translated works such as Dante's Inferno and John Gower's Confessio Amantis, and edited anthologies like New Poems 1960. Despite his earlier prominence, Tiller's poetry is less frequently anthologized today. However, his work remains a testament to his intellectual depth and artistic versatility..
