L’Histoire de Troie au Château d’Oiron is a scholarly work by Jean Guillaume and Pierre Brochard, published in 1996. It offers an in-depth analysis of the Château d’Oiron's Renaissance gallery, which is considered one of France's most significant painted interiors. Between 1546 and 1549, artist Noël Jaillier, commissioned by Claude Gouffier (the Grand Écuyer de France) , decorated the château's 55-meter-long gallery with 14 large-scale murals. These artworks depict scenes from Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, as well as Virgil’s Aeneid, illustrating the Trojan War and the journey of the hero Aeneas. The murals are framed in elaborate trompe-l'œil designs to enhance their dramatic effect. The book explores the gallery’s iconography and shows how it reflects the intellectual and moral concerns of 16th-century French humanism. Jaillier’s work blends styles from Roman art, the Fontainebleau school, Brussels tapestries, and Northern European landscapes. The gallery stands out for its scholarly and original approach, relying solely on classical texts of the Trojan cycle. The artist also drew inspiration from sources such as the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili. This book is an essential resource for understanding a unique piece of French Renaissance art and the cultural ideas that shaped it. ; Signed by Author. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket .
