Born in Heraklion, Crete, then under Ottoman rule, Kazantzakis studied law in Athens and later philosophy in Paris under Henri Bergson, whose influence is evident in his writings. Kazantzakis is best known internationally for his novels Zorba the Greek (1946) , The Last Temptation of Christ (1955) , and Christ Recrucified (1954) , which explore themes of spiritual conflict, freedom, and the tension between flesh and spirit. His works often fuse Christian and Nietzschean ideas, reflecting a passionate search for meaning and transcendence. A prolific and restless intellectual, Kazantzakis also translated major literary works into Greek and engaged deeply with political and spiritual ideologies throughout his life. Though controversial in his time—especially with the Orthodox Church—his literary legacy is celebrated for its philosophical depth, poetic language, and enduring humanism. He died in 1957 in Freiburg, Germany, and was buried in Heraklion under a headstone inscribed with the words: “I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free. ”. Good with no dust jacket .
