She began writing poetry during her school years and later pursued philosophy at the University of Liverpool, graduating in 1977. Her notable collections include Standing Female Nude (1985) , Selling Manhattan (1987) , Mean Time (1993) , and Rapture (2005) , the latter earning her the T. S. Eliot Prize. She is also known for The World's Wife (1999) , a collection that reimagines the lives of women from history and mythology.
