Johnson (Bryan Stanley William Johnson, 5 February 1933 – 13 November 1973) was an English novelist, poet, and filmmaker renowned for his experimental approach to literature. A leading figure in Britain's avant-garde literary scene of the 1960s, Johnson challenged traditional narrative structures and sought to infuse fiction with autobiographical truth. Born in Hammersmith, London, he left school at 16 and worked various jobs before teaching himself Latin and attending King's College London, where he studied English. His literary career was marked by innovation: Albert Angelo (1964) featured cut-through pages to reveal future plot points, while The Unfortunates (1969) was published as a "book in a box" with unbound chapters meant to be read in any order. Johnson's commitment to honesty in fiction led him to reject conventional storytelling, asserting that "telling stories is telling lies." His other notable works include Trawl (1966) , House Mother Normal (1971) , and Christie Malry's Own Double-Entry (1973). Beyond novels, he created experimental films such as You're Human Like the Rest of Them (1967) and Fat Man on a Beach (1973). Despite critical acclaim, Johnson struggled with depression and financial hardship, leading to his suicide at age 40. His work was rediscovered and celebrated posthumously, particularly through Jonathan Coe’s biography Like a Fiery Elephant (2004) , which helped cement Johnson’s place in modern British literary history.. Good+ in Fair dust jacket .
