Curated by Austrian photographer and editor Karl Pawek, the exhibition aimed to explore the question, "Was ist der Mensch?" ("What is Man?") , through a collection of 555 photographs by 264 photographers from 30 countries. These images sought to provide diverse perspectives on human existence, capturing individuals from around the world in various situations and contexts. The exhibition was accompanied by a photobook bearing the same title, which featured these compelling images and included a foreword by German writer Heinrich Böll. The book resonated with audiences, spending 12 weeks at the top of Der Spiegel's bestseller list in 1965. In 1968, a second iteration titled 2. Weltausstellung der Photographie: Die Frau ("2nd World Exhibition of Photography: The Woman") was organized, focusing on the theme of women. This exhibition showcased 522 photographs from 236 photographers across 85 countries, delving into the multifaceted roles and representations of women globally. A corresponding photobook was published, further cementing the project's impact in the realm of photographic arts. These exhibitions and their accompanying publications are celebrated for their comprehensive and humanistic portrayal of humanity, contributing significantly to the appreciation and understanding of photography as both an art form and a means of cultural documentation..
