He studied biochemistry at Lincoln College, Oxford, earning both a BA and an MSc. Transitioning to music criticism in 1971, Griffiths joined The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians in 1973 and later served as chief music critic for The Times (1982–1992) , The New Yorker (1992–1996) , and The New York Times (1997–2005). Griffiths has authored numerous books on contemporary music, including Modern Music: A Concise History from Debussy to Boulez (1978) and Modern Music and After: Directions Since 1945 (1995). His 1979 publication, A Guide to Electronic Music, offers an accessible overview of electronic instruments, tape music, synthesizers, and computer-controlled compositions, aiming to elucidate the background and suggest criteria for judgment in this evolving genre. Beyond criticism, Griffiths has written libretti for operas such as Tan Dun's Marco Polo (1996) and Elliott Carter's What Next? (1999). His novels, including Myself and Marco Polo (1989) and let me tell you (2008) , have received critical acclaim, with the former winning the 1990 Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best First Novel in the Europe and South Asia region.
