Raised in Aichi Prefecture, he graduated from Fukushima University in 2000 with a degree in sociology. Nakamura’s literary influences include authors such as Fyodor Dostoevsky, Franz Kafka, and Albert Camus. His debut novel, The Gun (2002) , garnered the Shincho Literary Prize for New Writers. Subsequent works earned him numerous accolades, including the Noma Literary Prize for Shield Me from the Light (2004) and the prestigious Akutagawa Prize for The Boy in the Earth (2005). In 2010, his novel The Thief received the Kenzaburo Oe Prize and was later translated into English, bringing him international recognition. Nakamura’s oeuvre, encompassing over a dozen novels and several short story collections, delves into crime, identity, and morality. His works have been translated into multiple languages, with English editions including Evil and the Mask (2013) , Last Winter We Parted (2014) , and My Annihilation (2022).
