Born in Stara Osota, Poland (now Ukraine) , he earned his MA from the Jagiellonian University of Kraków in 1938. During World War II, Zarnecki served in the Polish army, receiving both the Polish Cross of Valour and the French Croix de Guerre for his bravery in France. After being held as a prisoner of war from 1940 to 1942, he escaped and eventually reached England, where he joined the Free Polish Forces. In 1945, Zarnecki joined the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, initially working in the Conway Library. He completed his PhD in 1950 with a thesis on regional schools of English Romanesque sculpture. Rising through the academic ranks, he became a Reader in 1959 and served as Deputy Director of the Courtauld from 1961 to 1974. In 1963, he was appointed Professor of History of Art at the University of London. Zarnecki's scholarly work significantly enhanced public awareness of medieval art. Notably, in 1984, he chaired the committee organising the Arts Council's major exhibition on English Romanesque art from 1066 to 1200, which set new standards for exhibition arrangement and helped foster wider appreciation of the period. Throughout his career, Zarnecki received numerous honours, including being appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1970 and election as a Fellow of the British Academy in 1968. He was also a Fellow and vice-president of the Society of Antiquaries of London. His dedication to the study of Romanesque art and his influential teaching left a lasting legacy in the field of art history.. Good with no dust jacket .
