He pursued medical studies at King's College London and later at Clare College, Cambridge, earning his medical degree in 1885. Emerson’s passion for photography emerged during his medical career, leading him to advocate for "naturalistic photography." He emphasised capturing subjects in their authentic settings without manipulation, opposing the prevalent practices of staged compositions and extensive retouching. His seminal work, Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads (1886) , comprises 40 platinum prints that intimately portray the daily lives of East Anglian inhabitants, reflecting his commitment to realism.
