Best known for his tenure as Director of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York from 1962 to 1991, Szarkowski helped to elevate photography to a respected position within the art world. Originally trained as a photographer, Szarkowski published notable photographic works, including The Idea of Louis Sullivan (1956) and The Face of Minnesota (1958) , before shifting his focus to curation. At MoMA, he championed both historical and contemporary photographers, organising groundbreaking exhibitions that introduced the work of artists such as Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand, Lee Friedlander, and William Eggleston to a wider audience. His 1966 book and exhibition The Photographer’s Eye articulated a clear, thoughtful vision of what makes photography a unique and compelling artistic medium. Szarkowski’s writing—insightful, accessible, and deeply informed—remains essential reading in photographic theory and criticism. Through his curatorial vision, scholarship, and advocacy, John Szarkowski played a pivotal role in shaping the history and discourse of photography in the 20th century..
