Born and raised in Manly, Sydney, she initially pursued a career in nursing, which enabled her to work and travel extensively across the USA, England, and Italy. Her time abroad not only honed her European language skills but also sparked a deep interest in European history. In her early forties, Dr. Bonner embarked on an academic journey, earning a Bachelor of Arts with Honours and subsequently a Ph. D. From the University of Sydney. Her doctoral research focused on the 'Auld Alliance' between Scotland and France, a subject that became central to her scholarly work. A pivotal figure in the Sydney Society for Scottish History (SSSH) , Dr. Bonner played an instrumental role in establishing its scholarly journal in 1993, serving as both co-editor and a regular contributor. Her dedication to the society was unwavering, delivering annual papers and fostering international collaborations with historians from Scotland, Canada, and New Zealand. Dr. Bonner's research was characterised by meticulous archival work, particularly in France, Scotland, and Italy. She was widely published in both English and French, with notable works including studies on Scottish soldiers in fifteenth-century France and analyses of the 'Auld Alliance's' political implications. Her contributions significantly advanced the understanding of early Scottish diasporas and Franco-Scottish diplomatic relations. In recognition of her scholarly achievements, Dr. Bonner was appointed a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques by the French government in 2005, an honour typically reserved for distinguished academics. She was also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and maintained active memberships in various historical associations. Dr. Elizabeth Ann Bonner's legacy endures through her extensive publications and the lasting impact she had on the field of Franco-Scottish historical studies.
