Hexter, 1910–1996) was a prominent American historian best known for his work on early modern England and the historiography of political thought. He was particularly influential in the study of the English Reformation and the works of political theorists such as Thomas More and Machiavelli. Hexter earned his Ph. D. From Harvard University and went on to teach at several prestigious institutions, including Washington University in St. Louis and Yale University. He was admired for his sharp wit, rigorous scholarship, and eloquent prose. Among his most notable contributions was his critique of the so-called “Whig interpretation” of history and his distinction between "splitters" and "lumpers" — two different approaches to historical interpretation. He also challenged some of the arguments made by historians such as Sir Geoffrey Elton, sparking influential debates in the field. J. H. Hexter’s writings, including Reappraisals in History and The Vision of Politics on the Eve of the Reformation, have left a lasting mark on the study of early modern political and intellectual history..
