He earned both his Bachelor of Arts (1971) and Master of Arts (1973) degrees in history from the University of Michigan, followed by a Master of Arts in museum practices from the State University of New York—Oneonta in 1974. Dunnigan's career includes significant roles in historical site administration: he served as managing director of Historic Fort Wayne in Indiana from 1974 to 1979 and as executive director of Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown, New York, from 1979 to 1996. In 1996, he joined the University of Michigan's William L. Clements Library, where he has held positions such as curator of maps, head of research and publications, associate director, and acting director. An accomplished author, Dunnigan has published extensively on early American military history and cartography. His notable works include Frontier Metropolis: Picturing Early Detroit, 1701–1838, which offers a visual history of Detroit's development, and A Picturesque Situation: Mackinac Before Photography, 1615–1860, exploring the visual documentation of Mackinac Island prior to the advent of photography. Throughout his career, Dunnigan has contributed significantly to the preservation and interpretation of early American history, particularly in the Great Lakes area.
