Constructed between 1533 and 1539 under the orders of King François I, the gallery was designed to link the royal apartments to the chapel and served as both a passageway and a statement of royal power and artistic prestige. The gallery is renowned for its magnificent decoration, which marked the introduction of the Italian Renaissance style into France. It features an elaborate blend of painting, stucco, and carved wood panelling, with much of the work attributed to Italian artists Rosso Fiorentino and his collaborators, brought to France by François I. The decoration combines mythological themes, classical motifs, and symbolic references to the king’s reign, glorifying his image as a cultured and powerful monarch. La Galerie François Ier is considered a masterpiece of the First School of Fontainebleau, a group of artists whose work had a lasting influence on French art. The gallery stands today not only as a symbol of the French Renaissance but also as a testament to François I’s role in transforming Fontainebleau into a centre of artistic innovation and grandeur..
