Born in Peoria, Illinois, Pfeiffer earned his bachelor's degree and Ph. D. In pharmacology from the University of Wisconsin, followed by a medical degree from the University of Chicago. Throughout his career, Pfeiffer focused on the biochemical underpinnings of mental illnesses, particularly schizophrenia. He posited that many psychological disorders stemmed from biochemical imbalances and advocated for treatment approaches that included nutritional interventions. In 1973, he founded the Brain Bio Center in Princeton, New Jersey, dedicated to researching and treating mental health conditions through biochemical methods. Pfeiffer's research led him to categorize schizophrenia into three biochemical subtypes: histapenia, histadelia, and pyroluria, each characterized by distinct metabolic imbalances. He believed that tailored nutritional therapies could address these specific imbalances, offering alternative or complementary treatments to conventional psychopharmacology. In addition to his clinical work, Pfeiffer authored several influential books, including Nutrition and Mental Illness: An Orthomolecular Approach to Balancing Body Chemistry, where he detailed his findings on the relationship between nutrition and mental health. Pfeiffer's contributions significantly advanced the understanding of the biochemical foundations of mental illnesses and highlighted the potential of nutritional and biochemical interventions in psychiatric treatment..
