Mererid HopwoodMererid Hopwood, born in February 1964 in Cardiff, Wales, is a distinguished poet, academic, and cultural figure. She holds the notable achievement of being the first woman to win the bardic Chair at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in 2001, a prestigious accolade in Welsh literature. Hopwood pursued her academic studies in Spanish and German at Aberystwyth University, graduating with first-class honours, and later earned a doctorate in German literature from University College London. Her career encompasses roles as a lecturer in German at the University of Wales, Swansea, and as a creative writing tutor. In October 2020, she was appointed Professor of Welsh and Celtic Studies at Aberystwyth University. Throughout her career, Hopwood has been honoured with numerous awards, including the Crown at the National Eisteddfod in 2003 and the Prose Medal in 2008. In 2018, she was elected as a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales.
