Born in Paris, he studied under Jean-Paul Laurens and Albert Besnard at the École des Beaux-Arts and later under Charles Lameire at the École des Arts Décoratifs. In 1914, Poughéon was awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome, though his residency at the Villa Medici was postponed until after World War I, from 1919 to 1923. Throughout his career, Poughéon was closely associated with the Bordeaux school, collaborating with notable artists such as Jean Dupas, René Buthaud, Jean Gabriel Domergue, Raphael Delorme, Jean Despujols, and Alfred Janniot. His style evolved towards geometric and classical themes, with his nudes achieving a post-Cubist sculptural monumentality akin to that of Tamara de Lempicka. His work also reflects the influence of Puvis de Chavannes and the Art Deco movement. Poughéon exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1911, earning a silver medal in 1927 and a gold medal in 1929. He contributed to several significant decorative projects, including murals for the Church of the Holy Spirit (1932–1934) and a monumental composition for the town hall annex of the 15th arrondissement of Paris. In 1935, he began teaching at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian. He was appointed director of the French Academy in Rome in 1942 and later served as curator of the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris. Beyond his paintings, Poughéon was also known for his illustrations in books and designs for banknotes, showcasing his versatility and significant contribution to the French art scene in the early to mid-20th century..
