Born on May 3, 1958, in Copenhagen, Denmark, she spent much of her youth abroad due to her father's work as a foreign correspondent. She studied law, archaeology, and anthropology at Girton College, Cambridge, graduating with first-class honors. Toksvig's career spans television, radio, and literature. She began as a comedian and presenter, hosting children's programs such as No. 73 and Motormouth. She later became a regular panelist on shows like Call My Bluff, Whose Line Is It Anyway? , and Have I Got News for You. From 2006 to 2015, she chaired BBC Radio 4's The News Quiz. In 2016, she succeeded Stephen Fry as host of the BBC television quiz show QI. Between 2017 and 2020, she co-presented The Great British Bake Off alongside Noel Fielding. An accomplished author, Toksvig has written plays, novels, and children's books. Her works often blend humor with insightful commentary on society. In 2015, she co-founded the Women's Equality Party, aiming to address gender inequality in the UK. She has also served as Chancellor of the University of Portsmouth. Openly gay since 1994, Toksvig is a prominent LGBTQ+ advocate.
