Born in Beverly, New Jersey, he initially pursued a career in law but turned to journalism, eventually becoming editor of The American Weekly, a popular Sunday newspaper supplement. Merritt's fiction is characterized by lush, imaginative settings, lost civilizations, and elements of the supernatural. His most famous works include The Moon Pool (1919) , The Metal Monster (1920) , The Ship of Ishtar (1924) , and Dwellers in the Mirage (1932). His writing influenced later fantasy and pulp fiction authors, including H. P. Lovecraft. Although not as widely recognized today, Merritt was one of the most successful and highly paid fantasy writers of his time.
