Born in Brigus, Newfoundland, Bartlett was the eldest of ten children in a family with a rich seafaring tradition. By the age of 17, he had mastered his first ship, embarking on a lifelong dedication to Arctic exploration. Bartlett participated in over 40 expeditions to the Arctic, more than anyone before or since. He served as captain of the SS Roosevelt, accompanying Robert E. Peary on multiple attempts to reach the North Pole. In 1909, he was awarded the Hubbard Medal by the National Geographic Society for his role in these expeditions. In 1913, Bartlett captained the Karluk during the Canadian Arctic Expedition led by Vilhjalmur Stefansson. After the ship became trapped and subsequently crushed by pack ice, Bartlett undertook a perilous 700-mile journey across the Chukchi Sea and Siberia to seek rescue for his stranded crew, demonstrating remarkable leadership and survival skills..
