Born in Sétif, Algeria, he relocated to Paris in 1957, where he pursued studies in mathematics. In 1969, he became one of the founding members, alongside Claude Chevalley, of the mathematics department at the Centre Universitaire Expérimental de Vincennes, which later evolved into the Université de Paris VIII. At this institution, Guedj taught the history of science and epistemology, maintaining a steadfast commitment to the principles of a people's university by refraining from administrative roles..
