Born in Detroit, he initially pursued acting and worked in radio and television before shifting to writing and producing. He wrote for several soap operas, including The Guiding Light, and later became deeply involved in theatre and academia. In 1994, he founded the Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University and launched Inside the Actors Studio, where he conducted in-depth interviews with renowned actors, directors, and writers. His meticulous research and insightful questions made the show a respected platform for exploring the craft of acting. Lipton also wrote books, including An Exaltation of Larks, and appeared in numerous guest roles on television, often playing fictionalized versions of himself.
