Born on 22 August 1860 in Valenton, France, he was educated at the Collège Stanislas and later at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. He passed the competitive agrégation in history in 1883 and earned his doctorate in letters in 1891. Imbart de la Tour began his teaching career as a professor of medieval history at the University of Besançon before moving to the University of Bordeaux in 1893, where he would spend much of his academic life. His research focused on the structures of the medieval Church and the intellectual and social origins of the Reformation. His most significant scholarly contribution is the multi-volume series Les Origines de la Réforme, a comprehensive study exploring the religious and cultural transformations that laid the groundwork for the Protestant Reformation in France. Recognised for his rigorous scholarship and depth of insight, he was elected to the prestigious Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques in 1909. Imbart de la Tour passed away in Bordeaux on 4 December 1925, leaving behind a legacy of thoughtful, meticulous historical writing that continues to inform the study of religion and society in medieval and early modern Europe..
