Born in 1925 in Anglesey, Wales, Evans became deeply involved in the cultural and political life of his country. He was a member of Plaid Cymru, the political party that advocates for Welsh nationalism, and played a crucial role in its growth and influence. Evans's passion for preserving Welsh language and culture drove his political career, and he became the first Plaid Cymru member of Parliament in 1966, representing the constituency of Caernarfon. In addition to his political work, Evans was a dedicated historian. His scholarly contributions focused on the history of Wales and its struggle for recognition and autonomy within the United Kingdom. His book The Welsh Language was particularly influential, underscoring the importance of the Welsh language to national identity. Evans was also known for his activism, famously going on hunger strike in 1969 to secure a Welsh-language television station, which was eventually achieved with the founding of S4C. Evans's work and his commitment to Welsh independence and cultural preservation left a lasting legacy, not only in the field of history but also in Welsh politics. He continued to advocate for his ideals throughout his life, becoming one of the most respected figures in modern Welsh history. He passed away in 2005, but his influence on the country’s political landscape and historical scholarship remains significant.. Good+ in Fair dust jacket .
