He pursued higher education at Hastings College and the University of Chicago, earning his MA in mathematics in 1896. Moritz began his academic career as an assistant professor at Hastings College in 1893, later obtaining a PhD from the University of Nebraska in 1901. He furthered his studies in Europe under Heinrich Martin Weber and Theodor Reye, earning a second PhD from the University of Strasbourg in 1902. Returning to the U. S, he held positions at the University of Nebraska before joining the University of Washington in 1905 as a professor and head of the Department of Mathematics and Astronomy.
