Joseph Jefferson Farjeon was a British novelist and playwright, best known for his contributions to the Golden Age of detective fiction. Born on June 4, 1883, in London, he came from a family with strong literary and artistic connections. His father, Benjamin Leopold Farjeon, was a well-known novelist, and his siblings, Eleanor and Herbert Farjeon, gained recognition in literature and theatre. Farjeon was a prolific writer, producing over 60 novels, many of them in the crime and mystery genre. His works often combined elements of suspense, adventure, and psychological tension, setting them apart from the traditional puzzle-like detective stories of his time. He was known for his well-drawn characters, fast-paced narratives, and atmospheric settings. One of his most famous novels, Mystery in White (1937) , is a classic holiday-season murder mystery that has remained popular among modern readers. Another notable work, Thirteen Guests (1936) , follows the classic whodunit format with an intriguing mix of social commentary and suspense. Farjeon’s writing was highly regarded by his contemporaries. Dorothy L. Sayers, a leading figure in the genre, praised his work, and he was widely read during his lifetime. While not as well-remembered as some of his Golden Age peers, his books have seen a revival in recent years, with publishers like the British Library republishing several of his mysteries. In addition to writing under his own name, Farjeon sometimes used the pseudonym Anthony Swift, including for the novel Murder at a Police Station (1943).. Good with no dust jacket .
