Elliott Erwitt was a renowned American photographer, celebrated for his keen eye for irony, wit, and human emotion. Born in Paris on 26 July 1928 to Russian émigré parents, he spent his early years in Milan before emigrating to the United States in 1939. Erwitt studied photography at Los Angeles City College and later moved to New York, where he worked as a photographer’s assistant. In the early 1950s, he joined the prestigious Magnum Photos agency, founded by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa. Through Magnum, he developed a distinguished career in documentary photography, capturing everyday life, political figures, and humorous moments with a unique, often playful perspective. His most famous images include candid shots of dogs, striking street photography, and portraits of major historical figures, including Marilyn Monroe, Che Guevara, and Richard Nixon. Erwitt also worked extensively in advertising and filmmaking, directing several documentaries and television programs. With a career spanning over seven decades, Elliott Erwitt’s work remains influential, blending artistry with humour and an astute observation of human nature. He passed away on 29 November 2023, leaving behind a legacy of iconic and timeless photography.. Very Good with no dust jacket .
