Born in Berlin to a Jewish family, Hamburger fled Nazi Germany in the 1930s and eventually settled in England. His personal history of exile deeply influenced his poetic voice, which often explored themes of displacement, memory, and the emotional impacts of war. As a translator, Hamburger was renowned for his sensitivity to the nuances of language and his ability to convey the emotional essence of the original texts.
