His work is noted for its vitality and accessibility, often blending conversational free verse with traditional forms. He also edited several anthologies, such as The New Lake Poets and This Green Earth: A Celebration of Nature Poetry, and compiled Winter Pollen, a collection of Ted Hughes's prose. He received several literary awards, including the Cholmondeley Award in 1982.
