Published in 1824, the work began as a commentary on Antonio Beccadelli's Renaissance Latin poem sequence, Hermaphroditus, but expanded into a much larger treatise due to the extensive nature of Forberg's notes and research. Forberg organized his findings into eight categories based on different sexual practices and phenomena, supported by a wealth of citations from classical literature. The book is notable for its methodical approach to the classification of erotic topics, making extensive use of classical sources to illuminate the subjects discussed. This systematic arrangement includes detailed explorations of various sexual acts, clearly delineated into chapters such as copulation, masturbation, and less conventional practices, reflecting a bold and scholarly approach to the topic. Forberg's work is praised for its erudite content and the clarity it brings to often ambiguous and obscure classical texts, shedding light on the sexual norms and deviations of ancient cultures. Friedrich Karl Forberg's De Figuris Veneris was translated into English in 1884 under the title Manual of Classical Erotology. This edition was privately published, limited to only 100 copies, making it a rare collector's item. The limited run reflects both the controversial nature of the content and the niche audience of scholars and enthusiasts of classical erotology and literature. This exclusivity added to the allure and mystique of Forberg's comprehensive treatise on ancient erotic practices and literature.
