Born in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, he studied Natural Sciences at Queens' College, Cambridge, where he co-founded the literary magazine Delta and became associated with poets such as Ted Hughes and Philip Hobsbaum. Redgrove was a key figure in 'The Group', a collective of poets who met to discuss and critique each other's work. His poetry is noted for its rich language and exploration of themes such as transformation, sexuality, and the subconscious. Redgrove's scientific background informed his literary work, blending empirical observation with mythic and psychological elements. He published numerous poetry collections, including The Collector (1959) , The Force (1966) , and Dr. Faust’s Sea-Spiral Spirit (1972).
