Slight wear to spine, covers and corners. ; Robert Bly (1926–2021) was an influential American poet, translator, essayist, and activist, renowned for his lyrical style, deep engagement with myth and psychology, and his role in the mythopoetic men's movement. Born in Madison, Minnesota, to Norwegian-American parents, Bly served in the U. S. Navy during World War II before studying at Harvard University, where he graduated in 1950. He later earned an MFA from the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop. A Fulbright grant in 1956 allowed him to travel to Norway, where he began translating works by European and South American poets, introducing figures like Pablo Neruda and César Vallejo to American readers. Bly's first major poetry collection, Silence in the Snowy Fields (1962) , showcased his "deep image" style, characterized by vivid imagery and introspective themes. His 1967 collection, The Light Around the Body, which critiqued U. S. Involvement in the Vietnam War, won the National Book Award for Poetry in 1968. Bly donated the prize money to the anti-war movement and co-founded American Writers Against the Vietnam War. In 1990, Bly published Iron John: A Book About Men, which became a bestseller and a seminal text for the mythopoetic men's movement. The book delved into male identity through the lens of mythology and Jungian psychology, encouraging men to explore emotional depth and personal growth. Throughout his career, Bly authored over 40 poetry collections, essays, and translations, and received numerous accolades, including being named Minnesota's first poet laureate in 2008. He passed away in Minneapolis at the age of 94, leaving a lasting impact on American literature and cultural discourse.. Very Good .
