Educated at Oxford, where he read French and German, Sail later worked as a teacher both in the UK and abroad before becoming a full-time writer. His poetry often explores themes of memory, perception, nature, and the passage of time, marked by a deep sensitivity to language and image. Sail has published numerous poetry collections, including Out of Land (1992) , Building into Air (1995) , and Waking Dreams (2010). He has also edited influential anthologies, such as The New Exeter Book of Riddles and First and Always: Poems for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. In addition to poetry, his work includes prose and radio broadcasts. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and has received several awards for his work, including a Hawthornden Fellowship.
