Title: "Reception of the Remains of Abraham Lincoln...in the City of New York, April 24, 1965) and letter from a black minister begging "fellow white men" to stop their public attacts on blacks in New-York Tribune (April 25, 1865)
Description: 0. 1st Edition. 0 pp. No Binding. Very good newspaper showing light wear to spine where disbound and vertical and horizontal folds. Short tears to bottom corners of some pages. Complete issue. Nearly 3 pages of news related to Lincoln and the winning battle of Sherman in particular at war's end (capture of Raleigh, NC in particular). Topics related to Lincoln's assassination and burial include descriptions of the progress of the cortege through Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, among other places, and obsequies from around the world. Also, "The Body in State at the City Hall" and "The Struggle to See the Corpse". Also sermons delivered in various churches in New York. Especially noteworthy is a letterwritten by J.W.B. Pennington to the editor expressing the writer's dismay that no mention has been made of the reactions of "colored people" and their churches in the papers. He asks that "fellow white people" refrain from" insulting the feelings and persons of colored people on our streets" in NY City (p. 7). He gives examples of insults he has encountered, one for his preaching a sermon on the assassination in a black church. "If they do not like us, just leave us alone" and the whole ugly situation will be cleared up. Lincoln's assassination has only sharpened the anger some whites feel and outwardly express towards "colored people", according to this witness. He hopes the newspapers will help stop these insults. Also, news of the assassination's details, "It is planned in Canada and ratified in Richmond" (p. 4). Very Good.
