Title: 40 Reward Notices for "Runaways" in National Intelligencer (15 newspapers dated 1842)
Description: Washington, DC, 1842. 0 pp. No Binding. Very good, original complete newspapers showing typical fading and wear to the left-hand side where disbound. Name in faded ink to top of front pages of most papers, stray foxing, splitting to spines of some and just a few tears. The notices offer rewards ranging from $10 to $1,000. There are approx. 40 notices (some repeats) in 15 newspapers, all published in 1842: March 31, April 7, April 9, April 14, June 11, June 14, June 18, July 19, July 23, July 26, July 28, October 15, December 13, December 22, and December 29. Also, there are notices by 2 separate men for "negroes wanted". In June18th, July 26th and October 15th newspapers, Joshua Staples of DC advertises that he "will pay the highest cash price." He can be found "at all times at the corner of 7th St. and Maryland Ave." Another notice appears in the December13th issue for "200 Negroes Wanted" to work on his plantation in Louisiana, "40 miles north of Natchez." Communication is to be directed to J. Butler, New Carthage, Louisiana. He is also looking for 1 or 2 partners to help out with supplying the negroes and running the plantation. Quite rare newspapers. Very Good.
