Author: Title: The Children's Picture Gallery
Description: New York, D. Appleton, 1859. First Edition. 0 pp. Hardcover. Includes "Engravings from One Hundred Paintings by Eminent English Artists Adapted for the Young". Original with a color engraving on the front board and a sepia engraving on the rear board and unstamped red cloth spine. This is a well-worn copy of an exceptionally uncommon book. The boards and the engravings on the boards have edgewear, but the wear is largely confined to the extreme edges. All 100 engravings are present are are in near fine/fine condition. The binding, however, is cracked and several pages are nearly loose. The artists whose work is represented by the engravings include, Cruikshank, Millais, Gilbert, Duncan, Haghe, Bonheur, Foster, Dodgson, etc. The engravings are printed on rectos and versos, and each engraving is accompanied three or four lines of descriptive text. There are numerous Christmas engravings, one of Cinderella (Cruikshank), historical scenes (Charles I, King Alfred, etc.), religious ("Christ in the Cornfield"), dramatic scenes ("Whale-Fishing"), rustic scenes, animals, etc. On the front endpaper is a Christmas gift inscription dated "1859". Laid in is rather elaborate card and envelope that was given to the owner of the book in 1864. The card has a lengthy holograph love poem written on the interior by an anxious suitor. Good.
