Author: [O'Neill, Eugene] Title: Eugene O'Neill's 'Long Day's Journey into Night' (booklet)
Description: 1956. First Edition. 0 pp. Soft Bound. Rare item. Good in wrappers with some wear to edges of covers and two short tears to upper edge of front and back and minor creasing to corners. There is some wear to spine which has a 7" split to the spine. It is still attached to the interior from the top down of spine for approx. 4".This booklet (approx. 9"x11.5" in size) is unusual in that there is no direct statement of date or name of theatre. Most likely, the date of the publication is 1956 and it is about the ground-breaking Helen Hayes Theatre New York premiere of "Long Day's Journey into Night" directed by Jose Quintero. The cover photo shows actress Florence Eldridge playing the mother in an imploring, bent-knee position with her husband (Fredric March, holding a gown) and two sons (Jason Robards and Bradford Dillman) in the background. It opens with photos "From the Eugene O'Neill Album, followed by a reprint of "Talk with Mrs. O'Neill" by Seymour Peck, first published in the New York Times (November 4, 1956), followed by full-page biographies with b&w photos of Fredric March and Florence Eldridge and shorter bios with pohtos of Jason Robards, Jr. and Bradford Dillman and Katherine Ross and Jose Quintero, the director and others. There are two pages of production photos taken by Gjon Mili and an essay (illustrated with photos from other productions of O'Neill's plays), "Eugene O'Neill, The Man and his Plays" by Louis Sheaffer. The final page shows photos of "Outstanding Productions of Circle in the Square" of which "The Iceman Cometh" (1956), directed by Jose Quintero is the most recent. Jose Quintero was a co-founder of Circle in the Square. Good.
