Ellet's letter to the editor of the Times and the publication of his earlier letter to the Times on the enemy's position at Manassas and the efficacy of a Union attack is published immediately following the current letter. Ellet was one of the major public works engineers in the United States during the mid-nineteenth century and a critic of McClellan's handling of the Army of the Potomac. At the time of this issue of the Times, Ellet was in charge of developing a fleet of vessels designed to take control of the Mississippi River and hold it for the Union forces. He died from from wounds suffered in June, 1862.
