Description: New York, Harper's, 1876. First Edition. 0 pp. Disbound. Nast, Thomas; Dore, Gustave. Complete, original disbound issue in near fine condition showing slight wear to spine and light fading only; short closed tear to three pages (barely discernible). This issue features two full-page illustrations by Thomas Nast, one on the front page portraying a lion and bear at the North Pole with the caption, "Another outrage at the pole (poll)--the British lion bear-dozed." The other is of a man with the face of a donkey and "red tape" wound around his chest and legs. He is reading a "Revolutionary Programme of the 'Reform' Party' promulgated by the (N.Y.) World, indorsed by Mr. Clarkson N. Potter." He stand on a barrel labeled "The Artist in Hair Splitting Mr. Potter. A man with an eagle-face (representing the U.S.) stands by his side on the ground, holding his tail, and saying, "'Don't bray--I mean roar--so loud, you will frighten those foreigners about to leave us. They can't appreciate your style of fun!'" The piece is titled, "The Lionized Asinus Vulgaris." Another feature is a full-page "Specimen Cut" illustration by Gustave Dore from Coleridge's "Rime of the Ancient Mariner." The illustation shows the mariner sitting atop the mast of his ship. Also, full-page with three panels illustrating "The Powder River Expedition Crossing the Platte, November 14, 1876" from "The Sioux War,--From Sketches by Our Special Artist with the Troops." Also, Chps. 1 and 2 of "Christmas at Thompson Hall" by Anthony Trollope with two illustrations. Another fictional piece: Chp. XXIV from "Carita" by Mrs. Oliphant. Very Good.
